Polypipe, the UK’s leading manufacturer of sustainable drainage, water management and cable protection products, has seen its Ridgiduct cable protection system used in a pioneering new sustainable way on a recent highways project.

Working closely with the main contractor J McCann Ltd, Polypipe supplied more than 14km of Ridgiduct in 94mm and 110mm diameters to provide temporary cable containment and protection of optical fibre cable along the M6 motorway during maintenance works over an 18 month period.

In a first for Polypipe, an agreement was made by both parties before commencing works that the product would be reclaimed at the end of the project rather than scrapped – allowing the material to be directly recycled into other Polypipe systems.

Ridgiduct was installed along the motorway’s central reservation to protect the temporary fibre cables, which would ordinarily be installed in the motorway verges. As such, J McCann Ltd needed a product that was robust enough to sufficiently protect the cables from damage for the duration of the project, while being flexible enough to follow the contours of the central reserve barrier.

Additional benefits of using the Ridgiduct system in this manner was that it is light weight and easy to manually handle. This benefitted in shorter installation and removal times, which is vital in highway projects due to the need to keep lane closure times and motorist disruption to a minimum.

Steve Adcock, Contracts and Technical Director at J McCann Ltd, said:

Selecting the right products for this project was vital. We needed solutions that were not only proven to work, but could also be installed and removed to tight timescales. Working with Polypipe meant that not only could we easily meet these objectives, but also recycle the product at the end of its useful life to minimise environmental impact.
